Hi, my name is Molly Beckman. I'm happy I had the chance to dive in Madang. I went with my parents to live there for a few years and some of my spare time was dedicated to diving. I love diving - it is a way to see the world at a new perspective and a different angle.
Diving in Papua New Guinea is like diving in waters that have not been touched by mankind. I have seen many types of marine life that I only dreamed about before. I've had encounters with sharks, rays, turtles, giant clams, octopus, and just about any type of fish imaginable. It sure is an experience that one will and can never forget.
The life under the water is unbelievable. The way of life and the organisms that live there can be observed in their natural habitat. It is almost like walking through the rain forest, but it has not yet been destroyed. It is something spectacular. I loved diving in Madang - each time it was a new adventure and a chance to learn new things.
A piece of advice I tell others is be careful with the reef. It is something special, and once destroyed it will never be the same. Another thing is if you wound have a open wound, do not dive here as there is the possibility of sharks. I found this out for myself when I looked behind me and there was a hammerhead that was bigger then me following me and was no more then six feet away. There are sharks and lots of other marine life down there but there really is no reason to be afraid. If you respect them they in return respect you.
You have to be considerate when it comes to the animals. It is there home in which you are, so yes, they may come to see what you are, but be respectful. I loved every moment I got to dive. I had some experiences that I learned from and I gained from. They are memories that are treasured and will last a lifetime. For anyone who thinks diving would be an interest, I tell you just try it out. You will find it to be lots of fun. A perfect place to go and try out your skills would be the waters of Madang. It is a place that holds so much more than some of the other places. Scuba diving offers a chance to see a whole new world that is at our fingertips and it can offer us a different way of looking at things. I loved this place and I think anyone who loves an adventure and to dive it is a place well worth your while to look in to.
